It'll be about a 7 hour drive, in summer.
Thanks!dont take him in the trip. the stress is unecesary and the cat would not want to go if you could ask him.Keep her/him in a crate. You want to keep it a little dark, so keep a sham or something over the door area. Do not blast music either. When mother's leave their young they put them in dark caves to be protected. So in natures rules, hide your baby from discomfort and danger. They will cherish you=)Put some cat nip in the carrier with it....a lot of people get the sleeping pills safe for animals from the vet. those work. but if you wanna save money, you can buy one of those harnesses, and whenever you take a break to go pee, put the harness on your cat (comes with a leech) and take it for a little walk. it doesn't really walk, but your cat will stiff around. it just calms your cat down a bit. also, feed your cat food, give you cat water at that time. they will actually eat and drink when the car has stopped moving. it wasn't such a bad trip for my cats moving from virginia to illinois. about a 14 hour tripWOW!! I can't believe people are actually telling you to use tranquilizers or sleeping pills. I don't care if vets say that they are safe, I know that they are completely unnecessary! I have driven back and forth on 10 hour road trips with my cat in the back seat. All I needed for him was water, food, his cat bed, and a small litter box on the floor. Your cat will zone out after a while from the vibration of the car driving on the road.
Please don't mess with drugs, no matter how safe. If the cat is jumping all around the car, then have a cat carrier with a blanket or towel in it and lock the cat in the carrier for a little while, or the majority of the trip but be sure to let him out every once in a while to get to food and water and litter.
wow people.1/4 of a pill of dramamine...Bring familiar toys and stuff it likes to play with so it feel at home.go to your vet and see if he can prescribe anything to sedate your catMe and my sister once put are cat in a clean plastic kitchen trash can with a blanket in the bottom and put it in the back seat with no top. She could have jumped out if she wanted but she slept the hole five hoursFeed it sleeping pills! Knock em out stone cold as if they just got stoned man! SWEETTake your cat out on "practice" runs. If you aren't traveling until next summer....you've got some time to help it adjust to traveling in the car.
Be sure that the carrier is plenty big enough. Put a familiar towel or small blanket in the carrier. Cover the carrier with a lightweight towel so no outside activities spook the cat. Have a portable litterbox ready, in case. I'm sure you will be able to tell if the cat needs to use it, circling around and scratching up the towel while meowing a lot.
Hopefully you will be traveling with someone so that you can alternately wait in the car with the air conditioning running while the other uses facilities. Drive through food is best if you have to eat. I have to travel alone so I leave at about 2 or 3 in the morning before the temperature gets too hot. If I have to stop for restroom I crank up the air conditioning so that it is super cold before I stop. I park in the shade, if possible, and make my bathroom jaunt about 3 to 4 minutes.
Happy traveling to you and your cat.
The best idea is to have the cat in a cat carrier. Although you may feel that letting the cat walk around is good for the cat it can be very dangerous to have a cat running around while driving. The next is if the cat owner ( or the one the cat loves the most) sits next to the cat that's the best thing and the cat can see and they can talk to the cat for comfit. Low music volume is best just background music. making sure the ride is smooth rather then to many sudden movements. With it being summer fresh air and not windows all down flushing to much air. I use a blaket that the cat has had since he was a kitten at the bottom of the carrier. If he has a beding with a blaket use that. and just one toy his favourate one.don't forget to pack kitty some fresh water!! Ask the vet for a mild tranquilizer. It is very humane. They are mild and will just take the edge off. I bought some for my Yorkie and the vet charged me $4.00 for 10 of them. So they are not expensive.Make sure its cool in the car and comfortable for it to sit and lie down plus make sure it dont bump to much etc. well i just made a 4 day trip from GA to WA with two cats. one a kitten and the other a stray i saved from GA, he was not happy. but i got a large dag cage for him so he could move around and had room for his litter box and food and water. but 7 hours shouldn't be to bad. if they won't freak out you can take them out and hold them for a while if your riding with someone. or just have a big enough carrier for a litter box and food and water they will probalby just sit sit in the cage and cry alittle and they fall asleep. it should be alright. good luck.#If you have any other info about this subject , Please add it free.# |
